Blood Supply Flashcards
What are veins?
Take blood to the heart and work under low pressure so don’t hold their shape and converge into venules
What are arteries?
Carry blood away from the heart
Elastic and muscular and hold their shape as they work under high pressure
A branch into arterioles
How is the head and neck supplied?
The right and left common carotid arteries which branch
What do the right and left common carotid arteries branch into?
- Internal carotid artery for the brain
3. External carotid artery for the face and neck
How is blood taken away from the head and neck?
The jugular venous system
What does the jugular venous system contain?
- internal jugular vein that drains the brain
2. the external and anterior jugular veins that drain the gave, scalp and neck
How is the upper limb supplied?
The subclavian artery which is called the brachial artery in the arm and the oscillate artery in the armpit
How is the upper limb drained?
A superficial Venous system consisting of the cephalic vein and the basillic vein
How is the thorax supplied?
The descending aorta which has branches for the intercostal spaces, the trachea and the oesophagus
How is the thorax drained?
Deep veins drain to superior thorax
The right is called the oxygous vein
The left is called the hemiazygous vein
How is the abdomen supplied?
Branches of the aorta as it comes through the diaphragm
What does the branch of the aorta called the coeliac trunk supply and what are its branches?
The superior organs
- superior mesenteric artery supplied the small intestine and the start of the large
- the renal arteries supply the kidneys
- the inferior mesenteric artery supplies the rest of the large intestine
What blood does the IVC collect?
The kidneys blood
The filtered blood of the liver
The blood of the lower limbs and the pelvis
How is the pelvis supplied?
The aorta > common illiac arteries > internal illiac artery which supplies the pelvic viscera and and muscles
How is the lower limb supplied?
External illiac artery > The femoral artery supplies the thigh which becomes the popliteal artery to supply the knee and the rest of the leg
