Q

What requirements are there of air and why is the nasal cavity the best place for air to come in?

A

The air must be

  1. warmed - warm blood flows through the mucous membrane
  2. humidified - moisture for the mucous epithelium
  3. filtered - hairs that collect particles of dust and mucous that traps large debris which is swept away by the cillia into the pharynx

Q

What make air flow within the cavity more turbulent?

A

The nasal septum and the nasal conchae increases the surface area and this produces an increase likelihood that air will contact the mucous membrane
