The Salivary Glands Flashcards
Describe of the parotid glands?
Largest with irregular shape
What are the three pairs of salivary glands?
The parotid glands
The submandibular glands
The sublingual glands
Describe the position of the parotid gland
Anterior to ear
Extends to lower mandible
Extends up to zygomatic arch
What muscles do the parotid glands cover?
Posteriorly the sternocleioidmastoid muscle
Anteriorly the masseter muscle
The parotid gland is exocrine so has a duct, what muscle does this cross and pierce and where does it enter?
Crosses the masseter
pierces the buccinator
enters the oral cavity in the cheek at the U2M
Describe the position of the submandibular gland?
Under inferior part of posterior mandible
Describe the duct of the submandibular gland?
Exits the gland and passes to the mucous membrane and opens at the floor of the oral cavity by the lingual frenulum
Describe the shape of the sublingual gland?
Smallest
almond shaped
Where is the sublingual gland located?
Under the tongue below the mucous membrane in the floor of the oral cavity
What is different about the ducts of the sublingual gland??
It is 10-12 small ducts that open into the oral cavity at either side of the lingual frenula
What are all three of the salivary glands made of?
acinar and alveoli glands
What are the two cell types of the glands?
serous cells that break down carbohydrates by producing amylase
and mucous cells that lubricate and produce glycoproteins
What kind of cells does the parotid gland contain?
Mainly serous
What type of cells do the sublingual gland contain?
Mainly mucous
What type of cells does the submandibular gland contain?
Mixture of serous and mucous
