W3- Lecture 12.1- Concepts Of Pharmacology Flashcards
Define pharmacology
the study of the effect of drugs on the function of living systems
Define pharmacodynamics
the effects of the drug on the body
Define pharmacokinetics -
What does it relate to (acronym )
the effects of the body on the drug
relates to Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, Excretion (ADME)
Define drug
biologically active compound (other than a nutrient or essential dietary ingredient) taken with the intent to produce a change in the body
Define medicine
chemical preparation which usually contains one or more drugs administered with the purpose of producing a therapeutic effect.
Name 4 pharmacological principles
- active ingredients
- selectively binds to receptors
- produced therapeutic effect in a concentration based fashion
- effects supported by clinical trials and evidence
Describe how beta blockers help to reduce hypertension
Beta blockers (medicine) is taken and binds to beta-adrrenergic receptors on myocytes (contractile cells of heart)
Intro cellular changed to myocytes
Reduced contractile rate
Heart beats more slowly
Reduced blood pressure and coresspondoing ailments (e.g cardiovascular disease, angina , stroke and heart failure)
