Vocabulary Of Disease Flashcards
Disease caused by foreign living organism (usually species specific) living inside or outside the animals body
Infectious disease
A type of infectious disease, spread from one host to another
Contagious disease
Living beings capable of transmitting disease
Vectors
Difference between mechanical and biological vectors
Mechanical- vector picks up, acts as vehicle, non specific
Biological- must go thro a specific vector (ex: mosquito regurgitating)
Inanimate objects that can spread diseases
Fomites
What a chronic disease means
Has had for long period of time
Acute disease
Fast occurring (either gets better or dies fast)
Peracute disease
Very acute, signs appear within hours
A subclinical disease
Minor signs
Carrier disease
Never shows signs, makes others sick
Endo vs exotoxins
exo- toxins secreted from cell wall
Endo- made inside cell (part of cell wall), cell must burst to release
Attenuation
The weakening of the organism (ex: vaccines)
Epidemiology
Study of distribution of disease within a population
Epizootic vs enzootic
Epizootic- spreads rapidly in population, runs course
Enzootic- continuously present in group w/o fast outbreak (rabies)
Morbidity
Percent that contract disease in a population
