Swine Disease Flashcards
what is Salt Poisoning
metabolic disease caused by excessive salt and limited water
signs of Salt Poisoning
edema in CNS–> ataxia, blindness, depression, recumbency, convulsions, death
what is “whey” and how does it cause Salt Poisoning
moisture left over from curdling milk at cheese manufacturers, fed to pigs bc nutrients, high in salt
problem if given w/o water
what causes Trichinosis
internal nematode Trichinella spiralis, consumed in larval state , migrates to muscles and encysts
signs of Trichinosis
usually none in animals
there is a high incidence of Trichinosis in which animal population
bears
how to prevent Trichinosis (both in humans and animals)
deworm animals, cook pork thouroughly if eating
what is MMA syndrome
what causes it
Mastitis, Metritis, and Agalactia syndrome
metabolic syndrome seen in sows before farrowing, bacterial infection (usu e coli) in mammary gland or uterus
usu due to poor MGMT
signs of MMA syndrome
fever, innapetance, agalactia, lethargy in sow, piglets not nursing -> starvation or failure to grow
what causes Erysipelas
bacteria Erysipelothrix sp.
found in tonsils of animals, shed in feces
signs of Erysipelas
septicemia-> fever, depression, anorexia, skin necrosis
Erysipelas is also called
why?
“Diamond skin disease” bc appearance of skin necrosis
how to treat erysipelas
prevent?
antibiotics
vaccine
what is TGE
Transmissible Gastroenteritis
acute, rapid, viral disease
signs of TGE
v/d
TGE treatment and prevention
treatment= usu none, high mortality in piglets prevention= vaccine (not v. protective)
what is PEDv
what causes it
Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus
cause= corona virus
PEDv signs
severe diarrhea, acute death (mortality rate ab 100% in piglets)
PEDv prevention
good isolation, no vaccine, biosecurity
what causes gastric ulcers in swine
stress, poor mgmt/ diet (high concentrates, acid builds up, low fiber),
signs of gastric ulcers
anorexia, poor growth, anemia, melena (blood in feces)
define melena
blood in feces
cattle are prone to ulcers where
abomasum
signs of abomasal ulcers in cattle
similiar to swine ulcers (anemia, melena), abdominal pain (arched back, bruxism)
