Bovine Respiratory Disease Flashcards
components of upper respiratory tract
nasal cavity, sinuses, larynx, trachea
components of lower respiratory tract
bronchi, lungs
3 different kinds of pneumonia
infectious, inhalation, verminous (lung worms)
resp disease most common in what cattle
indoor, dairy
common contributors to resp disease
poor ventilation, stress
normal temp range for cattle
100.5-103F
mucopurulent v purulent nasal discharge
mucopurulent= clear+pus
purulent= all puss
(all clear is normal)
sign of extreme dyspnea in cattle/horses
open mouth breathing
signs of Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR)
cough, copious nasal/ocular discharge (mucopurulent), reddened MM w/ white necrotic plaques, decreased production, inappetence
IBR routes of infection
aerosol droplets, direct cow to cow contact, venereal spread (sexually transmitted)
what kind of disease is IBR
viral disease (is a herpes virus)
effects of IBR on the reproductive tract
infects reproductive tract causing sterility or spontaneous abortion
this virus is not pathogenic itself, but weakens the IS allowing for bacterial infection
Parinfluenza 3 (P/3)
what is shipping fever
a viral(P/3)/bacterial complex, commonly caused at auctions
virus that causes severe respiratory disease, invades lung tissue causing severe pneumonia
Bovine Respiratory Syncytial virus (BRSV)
