What is impaction colic

A

Obstruction or plug in intestinal tract, particularly in areas w idiosyncrasies in anatomy (pelvic flexure of large colon, illeum of small intestine)

Q

Signs of impaction colic

A
Abdominal pain (stretching, pawing, looking back at flank, depression, anorexia) increased HR / RR, little fecal output

Q

What is spasmodic colic

A

Colic caused by alteration in GI motility, ineffective peristalsis causing organs to become distended w gas or fluid

Q

Possible causes of spasmodic colic

A

Internal parasites (migration thro intestines or damage the cranial mesenteric artery), poor feeding management (sudden changes, mold, frozen feed, v cold water)

Q

Signs off spasmodic colic

A

13
Q

How internal parasites cause spasmodic colic via the cranial mesenteric artery

A

Damage to this artery via migrating thro could cut off blood supply to parts of Bowel (branches off into other arteries)

14
Q

What is displacement colic

A

Section of bowl fills w gas and moves, causes obstruction of normal ingesta flow and circulation (May lead to Ischemia/ lack of blood supply, and necrosis of organs)

15
Q

Causes of displacement colic

A

SI or LI fill w gas, displaced
Bowel/ colon displaced / torsion
Severe parasite load, part of bowel may die
Severe obstruction in bowel

16
Q

Signs of displacement colic

A

Pain, maniacal behavior, unaware, bloat, rapid HR, prolonged CRT, mm injected or cyanotic, nasogastric reflux

17
Q

Prognosis of horse w displacement colic

A

Usually surgery

18
Q

What is Potomac horse fever (PHF)

A

Acute diarrheal infectious disease

19
Q

What causes Potomac horse fever

A

Rickettsia organism= Neorickettsia risticii

20
Q

Vectors for Potomac horse fever

A

Freshwater snails and trematodes, aquatic insects; horses usually consume immature microscopic larvae

21
Q

When are incidences of PHF highest

A

Late summer and fall

22
Q

How to treat PHF

A

Antibiotics and fluids (for dehydration)

23
Q

How PHF prevented

A

Vaccine (booster in spring or early summer)

Minimize standing water, don’t allow to drink from natural bodies, clean water vats and buckets
