What is Unilateral Vestibular Hypofunction? Causes?
Impairment of the vestibular system, in one ear. (Balance system in inner ear)
- Viral Infection
- Trauma
- Vascular Events
What is Bilateral Vestibular Hypofunction?
Bilateral inner ear involvement secondary to:
- Ototoxicity
- Trauma
- Tumor of the 8th CN
What is Otitis Media?
Middle ear infection; causing fever and ear pain
Signs and Symptoms of UVH?
- Blurred vision
- Vertigo
- Poor Balance
- Spontaneous Nystagmus
(Especially to one Side)
Signs and Symptoms of BVH?
- Oscillopsia; Visual blurring with head movements
- Disequilibrium
Nausea difference between BVH and UVH?
UVH: Nausea Present
BVH: No Nausea
Gaze Stabilization: What is VOR x 1
Target Stable, head is moving while eyes stay focused on target
Gaze Stabilization: What is VOR x 2
Target and Head move in Opposite Directions
Signs and Symptoms of Meniere’s Disease?
- Tinnitus
- Deafness
- Sensation of Fullness in the Ear
- Vertigo
Signs and Symptoms of Acoustic Neuroma?
- Hearing loss (one side)
- Tinnitus in affected ear (one side)
- Facial Numbness
- Unsteadiness
(Usually unilateral)
