Multiple Sclerosis: Management of Fatigue and Spasticity, Energy Conservation Flashcards
How does MS-Related fatigue during exercise occur? How can it be offsetted?
Often occurs due to Thermal Stress
Offset by:
- Adequate rest
- Use of cooling and pre-cooling treatment during exercise
Examples of utilizing Energy Conservation techniques in patients with MS.
Modifying the environment or the task to ensure successful completion
Breaking down difficult activities in component parts
Pacing of activities
Patients with MS typically have spasticity stronger in the UE or LE?
LE spasticity generally greater
What general muscle groups are typically involved with spasticity? What muscles LE and UE?
Antigravity muscles
LE: Quadriceps, hip adductors, plantar flexors
UE: Shoulder adductors, Elbow, Wrist and finger flexors
Are heat or cold modalities better at reducing spasticity?
Cold modalities can temporarily reduce spasticity by decreasing tendon reflex excitability and clonus by slowing down conduction of impulses in nerves and muscles
