Progressive neuromuscular degenerative disorder

Are males or female affected?
Only males are affected! Females are carriers

X-Linked Recessive Trait from Carrier Mother passed to Boys
First symptoms of DMD?: Proximal or Distal Muscle Weakness?

- Toe Walking
- Waddling Gait (Trendelemberg)

Getting off the floor, needing to use the Gower’s Maneuver/sign
What is the Gower’s Sign?
The child assumes the hands-and-knees position and then climbs to a stand by “walking” his hands progressively up his shins, knees, and thighs
When does the inability to ambulate mainly manifest?
10-12 years of age
What problems start to arise once the patient begins using a wheelchair?
- Contractures
- Respiratory Problems
- Scoliosis
