Dermatomes Flashcards
What is a dermatome?
A dermatome is defined as the area of skin supplied by a single nerve root.
The 31 spine segments on each side give rise to 31 spinal nerves, which are composed of how many spinal nerves per region?
8 cervical
12 thoracic
5 lumbar
5 sacral
1 coccygeal spinal nerve.
What transmits sensory information from a specific dermatome?
Sensory/afferent nerve fibers to the spinal
nerve of a specific segment of the spinal cord.
What occurs with pressure to a nerve root?
leads to loss of muscle [tone and mass], but the loss is often not as obvious as when pressure is applied to a peripheral nerve.
