ASIA A
Complete: No sensory or motor function is preserved in sacral segments S4-S5
ASIA B
SENSORY INCOMPLETE
Sensory function IS preserved below the neurologic level, including: S4-S5
AND
NO motor function is preserved more than 3 levels below the motor level on either side of the body.
(No perianal contraction, there is perianal sensation)
ASIA C
“Weak” MOTOR INCOMPLETE
Motor function is preserved for voluntary anal contraction
OR
Patient is “sensory incomplete” AND has motor function more than 3 levels below the motor level on either side of the body
[Less than half of the key muscles function below overall neurologic level have a muscle grade >/= 3]
ASIA D
“Strong” MOTOR INCOMPLETE
Motor function is preserved for voluntary anal contraction
OR
patient is “sensory incomplete” AND has motor function more than 3 levels below the motor level on either side of the body
[AT LEAST HALF (half or more), of key muscle functions below the neurologic level having a muscle grade >/= 3]
ASIA E
NORMAL
Sensory and Motor functions are normal in a patient that had prior deficits
