Vessels of the Head and Neck Flashcards
What are the 3 major branches originating form the aortic arch?
Left subclavian artery
Left Common carotid artery
Brachiocephalic trunk
What are the branches coming off the brachiocephalic trunk?
Right common carotid artery
Right subclavian artery
Which vessels do the common carotid arteries bifurcate into?
Internal and external carotid arteries
What do the internal carotid arteries supply?
Brings blood to structures located INSIDE skull
What do the external carotid arteries supply?
Supplies blood to structures OUTSIDE skull
What does the right subclavian artery supply?
Blood to right arm (passes under clavicle) and some branches supplying head and neck
What does the left subclavian artery supply?
To the left arm
passes under clavicle (ie sub = under)
Which is the principle vein coming from the head and neck?
Internal jugular vein
Describe the location and structure of the internal jugular vein
Lies behind subclavian artery
Common facial vein drain into it
Runs behind common carotid artery
Ends by joining subclavian vein => forms brachiocephalic vein
What forms the superior vena cava?
2 brachiocephalic veins from either side join to form superior vena cava
Why is the internal jugular vein hard to see?
Sternocleidomastoid muscle lies directly anterior to it
Where is the external jugular vein found?
just below the ear formed from scalp and face veins joining (is very superficial)
passes over sternocleidomastoid muscle and passes behind clavicle to join subclavian vein
