Upper part of stomach,
Forms a bulge above the level of the opening of the oesophagus
What is the pyloric antrum ?
Initial portion of pylorus; near bottom of stomach, proximal to pyloric sphincter
What is the pylorus?
Opening of the stomach into the duodenum
What is the function of the pyloric sphincter?
Contracts if duodenum is too distended due to increased food digestion
- controls passage of food into small intestine
What is the pyloric sphincter?
Band of smooth muscle at the junction between the pylorus and duodenum
What are rugae?

What is the role of rugae in the stomach?
Allows expansion of stomach after food and liquid consumption
What is the cardia?
Opening of the oesophagus into the stomach
Explain why the cardia is at an oblique angle?
prevents reflux of gastric acid same as upper/lower sphincters
