The Liver Flashcards
What are the 4 lobes of the liver?
Right
Left
Caudate (physiologically independent - posteriorly located)
Quadrate (underside of medial segment of left lobe)
Where is the gallbladder located in relation to the liver?
Just below it
What are the 2 subphrenic recesses?
Spaces separating diaphragm from surface of liver
L + R divided by falciform ligament
What is the hepatorenal pouch?
Recess between right liver lobe and right kidney
part of the peirtoneal cavity
What is the significance of the hepatorenal pouch?
During infection, collects pus to localise and reduce it spreading
What is the falciform ligament?
Continuous with peritoneum attaching liver to anterior body wall
Runs from highest part of liver down to hepatic notch
What is the coronary ligament?
Top of liver, forming convex diaphragmatic shape of liver
divides surface of liver into L + R
What is the significance of the Caudate lobe of the liver?
Directly attached to IVC
What is the porta hepatis?
Deep fissure on inferior surface of liver where portal vein and hepatic artery enter liver, and hepatic ducts leave
Where do the hepatic veins leave the liver?
2 or 3 large hepatic veins leave via the top of the liver joining the IVC
further down smaller veins also join IVC
What is the lesser omentum?
Double layer of peritoneum passing from the porta hepatis to superior border of stomach and duodenum
