Vascular Pathology Flashcards
1
Q
what is tunica interna and tunica media seperated by?
A
internal elastic lamina
2
Q
what is arteriosclerosis?
A
- smooth muscle in the artery’s tunica media starts to degenerate.
- atheroma formation
3
Q
what are foam cells?
A
cause the formation of fatty yellow streak in the vessel’s tunica interna.
4
Q
What are the consequences of atheroma?
A
- smaller blood vessels are blocked
- plaques may be a site of Aneurysm
- plaques may become site of thrombosis
5
Q
what is deep vein thrombosis?
A
- endothelial damage
- hypercoagulability
- venous stasis
6
Q
why is CNS tissue very susceptible?
A
- need a continuous supply of oxygen
- CNS tissue does not regenerate
7
Q
what is ischemic heart disease?
A
heart doesn’t receive enough oxygen.
8
Q
how do you prevent or alleviate myocardial infarction?
A
- clot busting drugs
- drug to prevent blood clots forming
- stent
- coronary by-pass surgery
- stem cells injected into infarcted area to produce new cardiac muscle.
9
Q
what is hypertension?
A
prolonged period of high blood pressure
10
Q
what are the long term effects of hypertension?
A
- kidney damage
- increased bulk of heart
- damaged arteries leading to atherosclerosis
