Cells Of the Immune System Flashcards
what is a myeloid lineage?
- -gives rise to neutrophils
- -eosinophils
- -basophils
What is a lymphoid lineage?
gives rise to B and T lymphocytes
where do B-lymphocytes develop?
foetal liver and bone marrow in adults
where do T-lymphocytes mature?
thymus
what do cytokines regulate?
leukocyte division and differentiation
what is the difference between TH1 and TH2?
TH1 activate macrophages and TH2 help antibody responses.
what is the role of T-helper cells?
express CD4 receptor on cell surface and recognise antigens in association with MHC class II Molecules.
what is the role of T-cytotoxic cells?
express CD8 cell surface receptor and recognise antigen associated with class I MHC molecule.
what are the three main types of antigen presenting cells?
dendritic cells, macrophages and B-cells.
what are lymph nodes?
specialized collection of lymphoid tissues along the lymphatic system
found in neck,groin and axillae
where do T cells concentrate in the lymph nodes?
paracortex
where do B-cells concentrate in the lymph nodes?
germinal centers
where do plasma cells concentrate in the lymph nodes?
medulla
what is the role of the spleen?
provides protection against blood-borne antigens ,acting as a filter for blood.
what is the red pulp in spleen?
where worn out red blood cells are destroyed
