Acute inflammation Flashcards
what is the purpose of inflammation?
serves to rid you of both the initial cause of cell injury and to clean up the area.
what are the causes of inflammation?
infection
tissue necrosis
foreign body
hypersensitivivty
what is an oedema?
fluid leakage by exudation
what is a transudate?
ultrafiltrate of plasma
low protein content
forcing water out of the blood
what is an exudate?
high protein content
vascular permeability
result of inflammation
what is margination?
Stasis (slower flow) allows more white blood cells to be re-distributed to the endothelial surface of the vascular system.
What is rolling?
leukocytes adhere transiently to endothelial surface but pushed by force of blood flow.
what is transmigration?
leukocytes travel through inter-endothelial spaces.
mediated by PECAM.
what is migration?
leukocytes migrate along a chemotactic gradient to site of injury.
what are the 3 mechanisms of the intercellular destruction of microbes and debris?
1) Reactive oxygen species
2) Reactive nitrogen species
3) lysosomal enzymes
what is serous?
exudation of non viscous serous fluid from mesothelial cells.sometimes contain plasma from vascular leakage.
what is purulent?
inflammation that results in pus formation (neutrophils, dead cells and fluid.)
what is Fibrinous?
increased permeability allows fibrin to pass into tissues and a procoagulent is present.
then a fibrinous exudate is deposited..
what is an ulcerative?
inflammation near an epithelium causing necrosis and exposure of underlying tissues.
