Urinary System Flashcards
What does the urinary system do?
It removes waste products from your body and blood.
What is the urinary system made up of?
Kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra
Kidneys
They are filters that constantly clean the blood. They have nephrons, and when the blood passes through the nephrons, it cleans it, leaving behind yellow fluid called urine that is passed on to the ureter.
Ureter
Tubes that lead urine to the urinary bladder
Urinary Bladder
Storage for urine until excretion
Urethra
Opening for excretion of urine
Urinary system problems
Bacterial infections, kidney stones, kidney disease
Bacterial infections
Bacteria can enter the bladder and ureters through the urethra. If it spreads to the kidneys, it could permanently damage the nephrons
Kidney stones
Salts and wastes can collect and form stones that can interfere with urine flow
Kidney disease
Damage to nephrons can prevent normal kidney functioning
