Integumentary System Flashcards
Why do you need skin?
- keep water in your body and foreign particles out
- nerve endings let you feel things around you
- regulate temp with sweat glands. As sweat evaporates, skin cools
- skin gets rid of waste through sweat
What is the integumentary system made of?
Skin, hair, and nails
What is melanin?
Melanin gives skin it’s color and absorbs ultraviolet light from the sun
Epidermis and dermis
Epidermis is the outer layer
Dermis is thick under layer
Epidermis
Most cells in epidermis are dead
The cells are filled with protein called keratin that helps make skin tough
Dermis
Has fibers made of the protein collagen
The fibers provide strength and let the skin bend without tearing
Hair
Hair forms at the bottom of a sac called a hair follicle
Hair gets its color from melanin
Hair protects from UV light and keeps out foreign particles
They help regulate body temp
Nails
Nails grow from a nail root
Nails protect fingers and toes so they can be more sensitive to touch
Skin injuries
Skin can be cut, but repairs itself easily with blood clots
It can get cancer from UV rays
You can get acne from oils that clog hair follicles
