Cardiovascular System Flashcards
What does the cardiovascular system do?
It carries nutrients to cells, and wastes from cells
What is the cardiovascular system made of?
Heart, blood, blood vessels
Heart
Heart is made of cardiac muscle tissue
Right and left side are separated
Right side replenishes oxygen poor blood
Left side sends away oxygen rich blood
Chambers
Upper chambers are called atria
Lower chambers are called ventricles
Sound of heart
Lub-dub is made by valves opening and closing
Cardiovascular problems
Atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, heart attacks and heart failure
Atherosclerosis
A heart disease where cholesterol buildup causes arteries to be narrower and less elastic
This can cause a heart attack
High Blood Pressure
Fatty deposit clogs arteries and can cause stroke, atherosclerosis, heart attack, heart failure, and kidney disease
Heart attack and heart failure
Heart attack- heart muscles cells die and heart can stop
Heart failure- heart can’t pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs
