Respiratory System Flashcards
What does the respiratory system do?
It takes in oxygen, releases carbon dioxide, and causes chemical reactions that release energy from food
What is the respiratory system made of?
Nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchus, bronchioles, alveoli, lungs, diaphragm
Nose
Te main passageway in and out of the respiratory system
Pharynx
The throat
Food and drink also travel down the pharynx
It branches into the larynx and the esophagus
Larynx
It contains the vocal chords/voice box
The vocal chords are elastic chords that stretch across the larynx
When air flows between the vocal chords, they vibrate making sound
Trachea
The trachea is the windpipe that branches into two bronchi
Bronchi
The two branches leading to the lungs
Bronchioles
Smaller tubes that branch into alveoli
Alveoli
Alveoli puts oxygen into the bloodstream
Respiratory disorders
SARS, asthma, emphysema
SARS
People have a fever and difficulty breathing
It is caused by a virus
Asthma
It is the restriction of the bronchioles
Emphysema
The alveoli have been damaged and people have trouble getting the oxygen they need
