What do bones do?
They work with muscles so they can move.
How do they help maintain homeostasis?
They store marrow inside of them that stores minerals and produces blood cells.
What are bones made up of?
They are made of cartilidge, spongy bone, blood vessels, marrow, and compact bone.
What do the two marrows do?
Red marrow produces both red and white blood cells, and yellow marrow stores fat.
What are the two different kinds of marrow?
Red and Yellow
Relation in growth between cartilidge and bone
You start with cartilidge, and as you grow it is replaced by bone.
What are the three different joints?
Gliding joint, ball and socket joint, hinge joint
What does a gliding joint do?
It allows bones to glide over each other with flexibility like in the hand.
What does a ball and socket joint do?
It lets you move your bone in all directions like a joystick. It is like your shoulder.
What does a hinge joint do?
It lets your bone move in one direction like a hinge. It is found in the knee.
Joints
Joints allow bones to move when muscles contract. Joints are held together by ligaments. Ligaments are connective tissue.
Skeletal System diseases
Fractures, joint dislocations, sprains, osteoporosis, arthritis
Fractures
Bones break
Joint dislocations
A joint or bones are moved out of place
Sprains
A ligament is stretched too far or torn
Osteoporosis
Bones become weak and less dense- they break more easily
Arthritis
Joints swell or stiffen
