Blood Flashcards
Plasma
Plasma is the fluid mixture made of water, minerals, nutrients, sugars, proteins, and other substances.
What is blood made of?
It is a connective tissue made of plasma, red blood cells, platelets, and white blood cells.
Red Blood Cells (RBC’s)
They carry oxygen in hemoglobin which is an oxygen carrying protein. It clings to the oxygen you inhale and gives the blood cells their red color.
Platelets
Platelets are pieces of larger cells found in bone marrow. They get pinched off of the bone and released into the blood stream. They form blood clots over cuts. They release chemicals that react which the proteins to form a blood clotting net.
White Blood Cells
Pathogens can enter the blood stream where WBCs release antibodies to destroy them. Some destroy without antibodies. They also help clean wounds.
Pathogens
Pathogens are germs and viruses that enter the bloodstream
Blood and body temp regulation
Blood vessels can enlarge and rise closer to the skin where they help keep warm if you are cold, then they return to normal.
Blood pressure
When your heart beats, it creates blood pressure.
Systolic pressure is the pressure inside the large arteries when ventricles contract
Diastolic is pressure inside arteries when ventricles relax
What are the blood types?
The types are A, AB, B, and O
What antibodies does A have?
B
What antibodies does B have?
A
What antibodies does AB have?
None
What antibodies does O have?
Both A and B
What do antibodies do?
They fight off other blood types.
What kind of blood can A receive?
A, O
