Chapter 5- The Evolution Of Living Things Flashcards
A group of organisms that are closely related and can mate to produce fertile offspring
Species
A characteristic that improves an individual’s ability to survive and reproduce in a particular environment
Adaptation
The process in which inherited characteristics within a population change over generations such that new species sometimes arise
Evolution
The trace or remains of an organism that lived long ago, most commonly preserved in sedimentary rock
Fossil
A historical sequence of life indicated by fossils found in layers of the earths crust
Fossil record
What kind of bird did Darwin study
Finches
A genetically determined characteristic
Trait
The human practice of breeding animals or plants that have certain desired traits
Selective breeding
First part of natural selection where many babies are born, but only a certain number live
Overproduction
Second part of natural selection where every individual has it’s own combination of traits
Inherited variation
Third part of natural selection where only some will survive predators and hunger
Struggle to survive
Fourth part of natural selection where the best adapted animals survive to reproduce
Successful reproduction
The process by which individuals that are better adapted to their environment survive and reproduce more successfully than less well adapted individuals do; a theory to explain the mechanism of evolution
Natural selection
The period between the birth of one generation and the birth of the next generation
Generation time
The formation of new species as a result of evolution
Speciation
