Lymphatic System Flashcards
What is lymph?
Lymph is the fluid collected by lymph nodes and capillaries that contains particles too enter capillaries
What is the lymphatic system made of?
Tonsils, thymus gland, lymph nodes, spleen, lymphatic vessels
Bone marrow and the lymphatic system
Bone marrow makes lymphocytes that help your body fight pathogens
Lymph nodes
As lymph travels through the lymph nodes, they remove pathogens and dead cells from it.
They are concentrated in the armpits, neck, and groin
Lymph nodes and killing pathogens
Lymph nodes contain lymphocytes
One type of lymphocyte called killer T cells surround and destroy pathogens
B cells make antibodies that attach to pathogens. The pathogens then clump together and are killed by other cells
Lymph nodes and an infection
When there is an infection, WBCs multiply. They are stored in the lymph nodes so they swell.
What do killer T cells do?
Surround and kill bacteria
What do B cells do?
Make antibodies that attach to pathogens
Thymus gland
T cells develop from immature lymphocytes made in bone marrow
They mature in the thymus gland
It is found behind the breastbone and just above the heart
Spleen
The spleen stores and produces lymphocytes
It is in the upper left side of the abdomen
Blood flows through, and it releases the lymphocytes onto it
The spleen and RBCs
As blood flows through, the old and weak RBCs burst, and it’s parts are reused
The spleen and pulp
White pulp
Red pulp
What does white pulp do?
It helps fight infections
What does red pup do?
It removes unwanted material such as defective blood cells
What are tonsils?
They are lymphatic tissue in the nasal cavity and either side of the tongue at the back of mouth
