Muscular System Flashcards
Skeletal
Enables bones to move
3 kinds of muscle
Skeletal, smooth, cardiac
Smooth
Moves food through digestive system
Cardiac
Pumps blood around the body
Pair of muscles
Tricep and bicep
When bicep contracts, arm bends- called a flexor
When tricep contracts, arm straightens- called an extensor
How you move
Messages are sent to skeletal muscles from the brain. The muscle cells then contract or get shorter.
Tendons
Tendons connect skeletal muscle to bones.
Why muscles are pairs
One is usually the flexor, one the extensor
Unexercised muscles
If your muscles aren’t exercised, they become smaller and weaker
Different kinds of exercise
Resistance, aerobic, flexibility
Resistance
They work against the weight of your body/resist your weight as in curl ups
Aerobic
Strengthens the heat and increases endurance
Flexibility
Stretches muscles and allows easier muscle movement
Muscle injuries
Strains, tendinitis
Strains
Tendons are stretched too far or torn
