Urinary system Flashcards
What is a nephron?
the basic structural and functional unit of the kidney, the primary function is to remove all waste products, reabsorption, and convert blood to urine.
What is a glomerulus?
network of blood vessels that filter blood. the main function is to filter blood by allowing smaller molecules (like water) to pass into the tubule.
What is a renal corpuscle?
filtration unit of the vertebrate nephron contains the bowman’s capsule and glomerulus.
What are kidney tubules & what is their function?
ducts that lead away from the glomerular capsule and terminate at the tip of the medullary pyramid. It returns and removes wastes from blood.
what is the bowman’s capsule
a part of the nephron that forms a cup-like sac surrounding the glomerulus.
what is the pronephros?
the most primitive of the three vertebral kidney.
what is the fate of the pronephros?
it degenerates at the end of the 4th week of gestation.
What is the mesonephros?
the middle primitive kidney.
In which vertebrate groups is the mesonephros the functional adult kidney?
Fish and amphibians.
In which vertebrate groups is the mesonephros an embryonic kidney?
reptiles, birds, and mammals
What is metanephros & in which groups is it found?
it is the 3rd embryonic kidney which will then become the permanent kidney in mammals, reptiles, and birds.
What is the ureter?
structure that connects the kidney and the bladder, it transports urine from the renal pelvis to the bladder.
What is the loop of Henle?
long u-shaped portion of the tubule that conducts urine with in each nephron of the kidney of reptiles, birds, and mammals. it recovers water and sodium chloride.
What is the renal cortex?
the outer layer of the kidney.
What is the renal medulla?
the inner part of the kidney.
