Q

What is the thenar eminence group of muscles?

A

fleshy part at the base of the thumb, made up of 4 muscles which control the movements of the thumb:
- Adductor pollicis
- Flexor pollicis brevis
- Opponens pollicis

Q

What is the extensor hood?

A

Is a fibrous structure located on the back of the fingers and toes. It serves as an attachment and distribution site for tendons and ligaments involved in finger and toe extension.
It is formed by the extensor digitorum tendon as it spreads out over the dorsal of the proximal phalanges.

Q

What is the anatomical snuff box?

A

Is a triangular depression on the lateral side of the wrist, visible and palpable when the thumb is fully extended.
It is between the extensor longs tendon and extensor pollicis breves tendon.
The floor is formed by scaphoid and trapezium bones, roof is covered by skin and superficial fascia.
The radial artery can be palpated here, it passes through the snuffbox.

Q

What is the carpal tunnel?

A

A rigid passageway in the wrist, plays a key role in hand and finger function and also a common site of nerve compression.
The median nerve passes through, responsible for sensation of the thumb.
The carpal tunnel also contains tendons of the flexor muscles:
- flexor digitorum superficials
- flexor digitorum profundus
- flexor pollicis longus
