Hip/ coxal joint Flashcards
Name/ classification=
Synovial ball & socket joint
Movements produced at joint=
- Flexion
- Extension
- Abduction
- Adduction
- Lateral (external) rotation
- Medial (internal) rotation
- Circumduction
Degrees of freedom and planes of movement=
3 degrees of freedom in the transverse, sagittal and frontal plane
Bones & articulating surfaces=
- Acetabulum made from Ilium, ischium and pubis
- AS: acetabulum of pelvis and head of femur
Cartilage=
- Hyaline cartilage: reduces friction
- Acetabular labrum: allows wider range of motion and increases stability
Joint capsule=
- Attached to articular margins and is tight posteriorly, strengthened by ligaments.
- Attached anteriorly to interiorly to intertrochanteric line and posteriorly above intertrochanteric crest (halfway along length of femur).
Synovial membrane=
Lines the capsule and secretes synovial fluid which nourishes cartilage, removes waste and reduces friction.
Ligaments=
Iliofemoral
Ischiofemoral
Pubofemoral
Blood supply=
Branches of deep femoral artery
- Medial femoral & lateral femoral circumflex artery.
Branch of obturator artery in ligament teres
Nerve supply=
Branches of femoral, obturator, gluteal and sciatic nerves.
