Conformity=
When an individual complies with another as a result of setting an example.
It can offer a sense of belonging and group identity and encourage people to adhere to moral standards, but at worst can sometimes bring out dark impulses.
Explain the conformity and authority Milgram obedience study
- Is about punishment and memory
- Learner has to learn some things
- If there were mistakes, they were punished by electric shock
- The researcher encourage increased voltage of electric shock
- Then the majority of participants continued following instructions.
Why do people conform?
- wish to feel part of a group
- wish to gain social approval
- wish to avoid being ignored

- Workload

- Patient/ family distress
Burnout=
emotional, mental and physical exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. Characterised by:
- Exhaustion
- Lack of enthusiasm
- drained
- lack of empathy
What are the core elements of dignity?
- Respect for personhood and individual
- communication
- toileting
- nutrition & feeding
- cleanliness of environment
- staff attitudes
Dignified care has a positive effect on treatment and social outcomes
What are the barriers of dignity in practice?
- Organisational level: time/ staffing
- Ward level: ward environment/ support
- Individual level: addressing patient needs, reflection
- Societal: value of caring
Depersonalisation=
treating a person as if they were not present or not a person. It occurs when workers have negative & cynical attitudes towards clients- emotional exhaustion could be a factor of this.
People may do it to protect themselves emotionally- an element of burnout.
