Lower limb pt 2: leg, foot and ankle Flashcards
What are the bones of the foot?
- Talus
- Tarsals
- Cuboid
- Navic
- Metatarsals
- Phalanges
What are the joints of the foot?
- Subtalar joint (synovial gliding joint, allows inversion and eversion)
- Talocrural joint (synovial hinge joint, allows plater and doors dorsi flexion)
Motion available at the foot=
- Inversion
- Eversion
- Toe flexion
- Toe extension
- Pronation
- Supination
What happens during an ankle sprain/ what ligaments are involved?
injury to the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and/or the calcaneofibular ligament (CFL).
- During an inversion ankle sprain, swelling, inflammation and bruising of the ankle happens.
- An eversion sprain is less common but is caused by tearing od deltoid ligament.
- A high ankle sprain causes damage to inferior tibiofibular joint
What are the bones of the leg?
- Tibia
- Fibula
What is the interosseous membrane of the leg?
- a thick dense fibrous sheet of connective tissue that spans the space between two bones, forming a type of syndesmosis joint.
- Inbetween tibia and fibula
What are the ligaments of the leg?
- Interosseous tibiofibular ligament
- Anterior tibiofibular ligament
- Posterior tibiofibular ligament
What are treatments do an ankle sprain?
minor: RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation)
Severe: a number of treatments
What is the tarsal tunnel
located on the inside of the ankle, and is formed by the ankle bones and the band of ligaments that stretches across the foot. Many of the blood vessels, nerves and tendons that provide movement and flexibility to the foot travel through the tarsal tunnel.
Tarsal tunnel syndrome results from compression of the posterior tibial nerve.
