Eclectic Approach
Uses techniques from various forms of therapy.
Psychoanalysis
Released previously repressed feelings; bring repressed feelings into conscious awareness where the patient can deal with them (self-insight); free association –> dream analysis
Resistance
Blocking from consciousness any anxiety-arousing material (hesitation, lying, or stuttering).
Interpretation
The analyst’s noting supposed dream meanings, resistances, and other significant behaviors.
Transference
Positive or negative feelings are transferred onto the therapist.
Psychodynamic Therapy
Views individuals as responding to unconscious forces and childhood experiences and that seeks to enhance self-insight.
Insight Therapies
Increasing a client’s awareness of underlying motives and defenses.
Behavior Therapy-Conditioning
Therapy that applies learning (conditioning) principles to the elimination of unwanted behaviors.
Counterconditioning
Classical conditioning to evoke new responses to stimuli that are triggering unwanted behaviors.
Exposure Therapy
Expose patients to things they fear and avoid.
Systematic Desensitization
Associates a pleasant, relaxed state with gradually increasing anxiety-triggering stimuli.
Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy
Exposes people to simulations of their greatest fears in a virtual sense.
Aversive Conditioning
Associates an unpleasant state with an unwanted behavior. Ex. alcohol will cause nausea.
Token Economy
Exchanges a token of some sort for various privileges or treats.
Cognitive Therapy
Thoughts. feelings, and behavior are all connected; identifying and changing unhelpful or inaccurate thinking, behavior and emotional responses.
