Unit 7: Waste Reduction Methods Flashcards
Reuse
Using a material again instead of discarding.
Reuse examples
Reusing mail envelopes, cups, beverage containers, and newspapers. Thrifting.
Reduce
Less material is used, so there is less to discard.
Reduce examples
Source reduction, material substitution, reusable cups, 2 sided paper, less packaging,
Recycling
Materials to become MSW are collected, converted into raw material, then used for production.
Recycling benefits
Utilize resources already extracted, encourages awareness of consumption.
Recycling drawbacks
Requires more energy than reducing or reusing, sometimes not cost effective.
Compost
Creation of organic matter (humus) by decomposition under controlled conditions.
Compost benefits
Creates an organic rich material that increases soil structure, CEC, and fertility. Decreases methane.
Compost drawbacks
Takes time and space.
