Classes of water pollutants
Heavy Metals, noise pollution, nutrient release, oil, oxygen demanding wastes, pathogens, sediment/suspended matter, solid waste, synthetic organic compounds, thermal pollution.
Pollutant
Specific chemicals with a specific effect. Use specific pollutant name, its source, its human/environmental impact, and mitigation strategies.
Pollution
Vague term for any pollutant that is harmful for the environment. Exceptions: Thermal pollution, noise pollution, sediment pollution.
Percent change
final - initial / initial x 100 = percent change
Clean Water Act
Regulates discharge of pollutants into the water of the US and regulates quality standards for surface waters.
Safe Water Drinking Act
Federal law that protects public drinking water supplies.
Endangered Species Act
Protects endangered and threatened species and their habitats.
CITES
Ensures that international trade of species does not harm them.
