Unit 6: Fish Production Flashcards
Fish production methods
Fishery and aquaculture
Fishery
A commercially harvestable population of fish within a particular ecological region.
Aquaculture
Farming aquatic organisms such as fish, shellfish, and seaweed in constructed aquatic ecosystems where they are protected from disease and predators.
Fishery pros
Easy to catch large amounts of fish.
Fishery cons
Tragedy of the commons, fishery collapse, damage habitats, cascading effects of population decline, bycatch.
Aquaculture pros
Protected from disease and predators, recover fisheries, can boost the economies of developing countries.
Aquaculture cons
Wastewater pumped into bodies of water, can harm wild fish if escaped.
Individual transferable quota (ITQ)
A fishery management program in which individual fishers are given a total allowable catch of fish in a season that they can either catch or sell.
Fishery collapse
Overfishing causes 90% decline in fish population.
Solutions to overfishing
International legislation, catch limits, age/size limits, modify techniques, educating consumers.
