Unit 6: Meat Production Flashcards
CAFO
A large indoor or outdoor structure designed for maximum output.
Free range
Animals wander free instead of staying in a confined space.
Meat production methods
CAFOs and free range
CAFO pros
Minimize land cost and usage, improve feeding efficiency, increased fraction of food energy that goes into animal body mass, reduced risk of adverse health effects.
CAFO cons
More methane, antibiotics contribute to antibiotic restraint strains, waste overflow causing nutrient runoff, waste in natural water ways.
Free range pros
More ethically acceptable, more sustainable, antibiotics reduced, less fossil fuels, no manure overflow.
Free range cons
More land, more expensive meat, possible overgrazing and desertification.
Less consumption of meat could lead to what?
Reduce CO2, methane, and N2O emissions, conserve water, reduce the use of antibiotics and growth hormones, improve topsoil.
Meat production is less efficient than what?
Agriculture, it takes 20x more land to produce the same amount of calories from meat as from plants.
