Unit 1: Intro to Ecosystems Flashcards
Competition
When individuals struggle to get a limited resource that is shared with others.
Competitve exclusion principle
Two species competing for the same limited resource can’t coexist. One species will do better than the other when they have the same ideal conditions.
Resource partioning
2 species dividing dividing resources to avoid competion over a shared resource.
Symbiotic relationships
Two species closely associated with eachother.
Predator
An animal that consumes another, its prey.
Prey
The animal a predator kills and consumes.
Temporal Resource Partioning
2 species in the same area using the same resources at different times.
Spatial Resource Partioning
2 species reduce competition by using different habitats.
Morphological Resource Partioning
Natural evolution reduces competition.
Predation effect
Positive/Negative
Competiton effect
Negative
Parasitism
An organism lives on or in another.
Parasitism effect
Negative/Positive
Herbivory
An animal consumes a producer.
Herbivory effect
Negative/Positive
Mutualism
2 species interact and benefit eachother.
Mutualism effect
Positive
Commensalism
A relationship where oen species benifets and one is not affected.
Commensalism effect
Postive and no effect
Two factors that decide if a species can do good in an area
Their range of tolerance and their relationships with other species.
Parasitoids
A form of predator that lay eggs in other organsims that will hatch and eat the host from the inside out.
What are parasites causing disease in their host called?
Pathogens
Organisms won’t engage in mutualistic relationships if what?
Their benefit is too small.
Keystone Species
A species that is not abundant but has a large effect on their ecological community.
Ecosystem Engineer
A keystone species that makes or keeps a habitat for other species.
