Unit 4, classification/binomial system Flashcards
What is binomial system?
-first part is genus, second part is species
-scientists uses it to name species
-universal
Eg) tiger= Panthera Tigris, jaguar= panthera onca, both are panthera so same genus so closely related
Why do different species look similar?
Eg) a camel and a llama
-live in similar environments (climatic)
-have similar selection pressures
-similar alleles will have the selective advantage
-produces similar/same proteins, so have the same characteristics
What is hierarchy in the classification system?
-smaller groups arranged within larger groups
-no overlap between groups, so multiple species in genus can’t make fertile offspring
What is the classification system order?
Domain
Kingdom
Phylum
Class
Order
Family
Genus
Species
How can you remember classification system order?
Dear king Phillip came over for good soup
Why should you use the classification system?
-understand relationships between organisms and keep track of changes (eg, endangered species)
-universal
-based on putting organisms into groups, eg) DNA sequences
What are the ways to classify?
Originally based on - looks, appearance, behaviour, fossils
Modern based on- DNA sequence, mRNA sequence, amino acid sequence, immunological ( compare antibody and self antigen shape )
If the sequence of two organisms your trying to classify are close together what does that mean?
More closely related
What is phylogenetic classification?
- arranges specie into groups according to their evolutionary origins and relationships
-phylogeny tells us who is related to whom and how closely related they are
-all organisms have evolved from share common ancestors (relatives) on phylogeny tree
