unit 2, viruses Flashcards
what’s common with all viruses
•a-cellular, not living
•can’t reproduce themselves
•20-200nm
•much smaller than eukaryotic and prokaryotic
How do viruses replicate ?
•recognises and attaches to host
•nucleic acid (RNA and DNA) is injected into host cell
• viral nucleic acts as information so host now makes viral components ( nucleic acid, enzymes, structural components)
• new virus made ( inside cell)
•cell burst open and releases virus
how do viruses invade specific cells
•attachment proteins bind to complementary receptor proteins
•different proteins have different receptor cells, which require different host cells
what is the envelope made out of
not present in all viruses , made of lipid
envelope protein characteristics
allows viruses to identify and attach to host cells
what does the capsid do
it is a protein coat , it surrounds and encloses nucleic acid
