unit 1, proteins Flashcards
what are the monomers that make up proteins
amino acids
what makes up an amino acid
r group (variable) , carboxyl group, amine group , hydrogen , all joined to carbon
what is the bond in proteins
peptide
what is a polymer of proteins known as
polypeptide
what happens in the primary structure
it’s a sequence of amino acids in a chain , the sequence of the amino acid can affect the tertiarty structure
what happens in the secondary structure
hydrogen bonds form between the amino acids , causing them to form a alpha helix coil or a beta pleated sheet. the hydrogen bonds make it stable
what happens in a tertiary structure
this is 3D shape of polypeptide chain, it creates a shape based on the sequence of amino acids as hydrogen bonds form in different areas , disulphide bonds occur between r groups
what happens in the quaternary structure
more than one polypeptide chain joined together, an example is haemoglobin
example of a chain like structure
collagen, structure in the skin
example of a globular like structure
haemoglobin, carries oxygen in the blood
