Unit 3, blood vessels Flashcards
What is the order that the blood vessels take?
Arteries -> atreioles -> capillaries -> veins
In arteries what is the properties of the muscle layer?
-thicker than veins
-constriction and dilation can occur to control volume of blood
In the arteries what is the properties of the elastic layer?
-thicker than veins to maintain blood pressure
-the walls can stretch and recoil in response to heart beat
In the arteries what is the property of the wall thickness?
- thicker wall than veins to help prevent vessels from bursting due to the high pressure
Do the arteries have valves?
No
How to remember arteries characteristics?
THICK arse
In the arterioles what is the property of the muscular layer?
- thicker than the arteries to help restrict blood flow into the capillaries
In the arterioles what is the property of the elastic layer?
- thinner than the arteries as the pressure is lower
In the arterioles what is the property of wall thickness?
- thinner as pressure is slightly lower
Do arterioles have valves?
No
In the veins what is the property of the muscle layer?
-relatively thin so it cannot control the blood flow
In the veins what is the property of the elastic layer?
-relatively thin as the pressure is much lower
In the veins what is the property of the wall thickness?
- this as the pressure is much lower so there is low risk of bursting
- thinness means the vessels are easily flattened which helps the flow of blood up to the heart
Do veins have valves?
Yes
How to remember veins characteristics?
Veins in my arm are THIN, they are ugly so lock them away behind a DOOR(valve)
