Unit 2 5.1 Flashcards
Name the four characteristics of a population
Geographic range, growth rate, density and distribution, and population distribution.
Geographic Range
The places that a population lives in makes up its geographic range.
Growth Rate
The rate at which the population of a species is growing at is it’s growth rate (negative or positive)
Density and Distribution
The number of individuals that can be found per unit area
Population distribution
It describes the way individuals are spaced out across their range.
Name the four factors that affect population growth.
Age Structure, Birthrate and death rate, Immigration and emigration, and exponential growth.
Age structure
Number of males and females of each age in a population
Birthrate and Death rate
Population can increases if its Birthrate is higher than its death rate
Immigration, Emigration
Immigration- States that a population can increase if individuals move into its range from elsewhere
Emigration- states that a population will decrease if individuals move out of an area.
Exponential Growth
A growth pattern in which the individuals in a population reproduce at a constant rate(ex x2)
Exponential growth
J shaped curve
The population will increase at a constant rate
Under what conditions can exponential growth occur
Unlimited resources + ideal conditions, absence of predation and disease.
Logistic Growth
S-shaped curve, since exponential growth can only occur if there are unlimited resources, the resources will eventually become limited. When this happens the population growth slows or stops, leveling off at the carrying compacity.
Carrying capacity
The largest number of individuals that a population of given environment can support.
Why does a population hit its carrying capacity
It doesn’t have enough resources to sustain any more organisms.
