11.2 Flashcards
Cell division
Process in which cells divide into two new cells
Asexual reproduction
Process in reproduction involving a single parent. This results in off-spring they are genetically identical to the parent.
Three species that reproduce asexually
Bacterium, hydra, kalanchoe.
Sexual reproduction
Type of reproduction in which cells from two parents unite to form the first cell of a new organism
What is an advantage and disadvantage of asexual reproduction
- They can reproduce quickly allowing them to compete with other organisms
- a lack of genetic diversity
Some species like yeast reproduce sexually and asexually. Why is this an advantage
It’s an advantage because you have the pro’s and the con’s which cancel out
Chromosome
Threadlike structure within the nucleus that contains genetic information they is passed on from one generation to the next.
How many chromosomes does a human cell have
46
Chromatin
Substance found in eukaryotic chromosomes that consists of tightly coiled around histones.
What happens during cytokinesis in animal cells
The cell membrane is drawn inward until the cytoplasm is pinched into nearly two equal parts.
What happens during cytokinesis in plant cells
A structure known as the cell plate forms halfway between the divided nuclei. The plates gradually develops into cell membranes that separates the two daughter cells. A cell wall then forms in between the two membranes, completing the process.
