33.1 Circulatory System Flashcards
Atrium
The upper chamber on both sides of the septum( receives blood from body)
Capillary
The fine branching blood vessels that form a network between the arterioles and venules
Myocardium
A layer of muscle enclosed by two thin layers of epithelial and connective tissue. The myocardium pumps blood through the circulatory system
Vein
The tubes that form part of the blood circulation body system. Carries oxygen depleted blood to the heart
Ventricle
Lower chambers on both sides of the septum.( pumps blood out of heart)
Aorta
Carries oxygen-rich blood to the body
Superior vena cava
Brings oxygen poor blood from the upper body to right atrium
Valves
Flaps of tissue that control the flow of fluid
Right atrium
Accepts oxygen poor blood from the body
Inferior vena cava
Brings oxygen poor blood from lower body to the right atrium
Left atrium
Accepts oxygen rich blood from the lungs
Left ventricle
Pumps oxygen rich blood to the body
Septum
Separates the two sides of the heart
Atrioventricular valves
Prevent blood from flowing backward into the atria
-Tricuspid, mitral and bicuspid valve.
Semilunar Valves
Prevent blood from flowing back into the ventricles when the heart relaxes
Aortic and pulmonary valves
