31.1 Flashcards
Nervous system
Collects information about the body’s internal and external environment, processes it, and responds to it
Peripheral nervous system
Consists of nerves and supporting cells. Collects information about internal and external body envionrment
Central nervous system
Consists of the brain and spinal cord. Processes information and creates a response that is delivered to appropriate part of body through peripheral nervous system
Resting neuron
Neuron that has a voltage difference or -70 millivolts compared to the outside
Synapse
The point at which a neuron transfers an implies to another cell
Three types of neurons
Sensory neuron- impulses go from sense organs(eyes and ears) to spinal cord and brain
Motor neurons- impulses from brain and spinal cord to muscles and glands
Interneurons- they do the high level work. Process information from sensory neurons and send commands to other interneurons and motor neurons.
Corpus callousum
Band of tissue that connects left and right hemisphere
Temporal lobe
Hearing and smell
Frontal lobe
Evaluating consequences, making judgements and forming plans.
Parietal lobe
Reading and speech
Occipital lobe
Vision
Spinal cord
Main communication link between brain and rest of body
Sensory division of peripheral nervous system
Transmits impulses from sense organs to central nervous system
Motor division role
Transmits impulses from central nervous system to muscles and glands
Somatic nervous system
Regulates body activities under conscious control such as movement of skeletal muscles
