11.3 Flashcards
Under what conditions do cells stop growing
Most cells will divide until they come into contact with one another. When a bone breaks, new cells from to start the healing process.
What condition to cells start growing
When a cut or breaks occurs, cells at the edges of the injury are stimulated to divide rapidly.
Cyclins
One of a family of proteins that regulates the cell cycle in eukaryotic cells
Apoptosis
The process of a programmed cell death. First the cell and it’s chromatib shrink, the parts of the cells membrane break off, neighboring cells quickly clean up the mess.
Cancer
A disorder in which some the body’s cells lose the ability to control growth.
Tumor
Mass of rapidly dividing cells that can damage the surrounding tissue.
Benign tumor
A tumor that does not spread to the surrounding healthy tissue or other parts of the body.
Malignant tumor
A tumor that invades and destroy surrounding tissue.
What causes cancer
Uncontrolled cell dividing
What are the three ways cancer can be treated
- Surgically removed
- Treated with radiation beams
- Chemotherapy kills all dividing cells good and bad
