Bio Ch. 9 Flashcards
What is energy and who needs it
Energy is the ability to do work. All living things depend on energy
Chemical energy
Energy stored in chemical compounds
ATP
Adenosine triphospate. (Three phosphate groups)
What are the three parts of an ATP molecule
Adenine, Ribose, and the three phosphate groups
ADP
Adenosine Diphospate( has two phosphate groups)
Do Cells store large amounts of ATP
No because it is not a good molecule to store large amounts of energy over long term.
Heterotrophs
Organisms that contain energy by consuming other living things
Autotrophs
Organisms that make their own food through photosynthesis
NADPH
Electron carrier( taxi cab service for hydrogen)
What is light and how do we perceive it.
Light is a form of energy from the sun that travels to Earth. We perceive the sun in wave lengths. Different wavelengths help determine what colors or shades we see.
What are pigments
They are light absorbing molecules used by plants to gather the suns energy
What is the most important pigment in plants
Chlorophyll
Why do leaves look green
Because chlorophyll reflects light in the green region. This is what turns leaves green.
What are Cholorplasts
Surrounded by two envelope membranes, and are filled with saclike chlorophyll containing membranes called thylakoids.
What are electron carrier molecules
They carry high energy electrons from place to place
