30.3 Flashcards
Process of digestion
The process by which food is converted into small molecules that can be used by the cells of the body.
Mechanical digestion
The physical breakdown of large pieces into smaller pieces
Chemical digestion
The enzymes breaking down food into smaller molecules that the body can use
Peristalsis
The smooth muscles that provide the force that moves the food through the esophagus toward the stomach
Chime
A mixture with an oatmeal like consistency called chyme. It is produced by the further breakdown of chunks of swallowed food.
How does bile aid in the digestion of fats
It breaks up globe of fat into smaller droplets that disperse in the watery environment if the small intestine. This makes it possible for the enzyme to reach the smaller fat droplets and break them down.
